Drooping or sagging eyelids are issues that affect many people, explaining why eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty or lid surgery) is the most common procedure globally when it comes to cosmetic surgery.

Many people confuse bags under the eyes with dark circles – but these two things, however, have nothing to do with each other.
What are bags under the eyes?
Bags under the eyes cause the skin on the lower eyelid to sag and fatty tissue to protrude from the eye socket, resulting in unsightly, visible changes.
What are dark circles?
Dark circles are discolorations of the lower eyelid skin and have other causes than bags under the eyes.
Eyelid lift due to visual impairment
It is important to note that an eyelid lift is not only performed for aesthetic reasons to improve the appearance of the eyes.
In the case of medical problems such as visual impairment due to drooping upper eyelids, eyelid correction may also be necessary for medical reasons.
It is advisable to undergo an examination in advance during a consultation appointment to determine the most suitable treatment option for individual needs.
The surgery for under-eye bags usually improves dark circles as well, although not completely.

What are the risks of an eyelid lift?
Patient safety is my top priority!
Every surgical procedure involves certain risks. The use of modern techniques and methods can significantly reduce the risk. Please bear in mind that all the complications listed below occur very rarely and are by no means the rule. Nevertheless, I am listing them to enable you to make a free and well-informed decision about the operation.
It is therefore important to take every precaution with this procedure – as with all other operations. This is a matter of course in my practice, because patient safety is my top priority.
General surgical risks:
- Allergic reactions: to medications or patches used are generally rare. If you have a known allergy, please let me know in advance so that I can take appropriate precautions!
- Risk of anesthesia: is nowadays considered to be very low and usually consists of an allergic or other pathological reaction to the medication used. We can discuss these risks separately with the anesthetist before the operation.
When are sports and saunas possible again after an eyelid lift?
Light sporting activities can be resumed after about 3-4 weeks; heavier physical exertion after 6 weeks. Intense sun exposure or going to the sauna should be avoided for about 3-6 months.
Can an eyelid lift / eyelid correction be achieved without surgery?
A great alternative to a surgical eyelid lift is a tightening with a CO2 laser treatment. This can be performed on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids and lateral eye wrinkles. In the case of severely drooping eyelids or pronounced bags under the eyes, however, there is no way around surgical tightening.
How do I prepare for an eyelid lift?
Preparation for the operation begins after you have decided to have the procedure.
Before an eyelid lift, we will discuss the following points together in order to positively influence the success in advance and avoid risks:
- Good general state of health. This is a prerequisite for an eyelid lift. There should be no acute or severe chronic illnesses that contraindicate a surgical procedure.
- If you suffer from high blood pressure or diabetes, you must be well controlled with medication.
- Blood-thinning medications must be discontinued well in advance of the surgery and, if necessary, replaced with suitable alternative medications.
- Avoid aspirin and other anti-inflammatory drugs, as these greatly impair blood clotting.
- The same applies to herbal medicines and food supplements, as these can also affect blood clotting.
If necessary, please indicate this when making the appointment.
- There should be no febrile infections or fever blisters present.
- Smoking constricts blood vessels and thus leads to circulatory disorders. This can lead to serious wound healing disorders. For this reason, I strongly recommend not smoking for 6 weeks before and 6 weeks after the operation.
- Prepare everything you will need after the operation at home and put the most important things within easy reach so that you can devote yourself to your recovery after the operation.
- Organize your transport home in advance as you are unable to drive yourself.
- Also avoid excessive alcohol consumption during this time.
- Regardless of the type of procedure, drinking enough water before and after the procedure is essential for recovery.

4 steps to an eyelid lift - eyelid correction
Eyelid correction is usually performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia. In the case of simultaneous upper and lower eyelid lifts, brief general anesthesia may be advisable.
Method of Eyelid Correction
During upper eyelid lifts, excess skin and some connective tissue and muscle are removed, and if necessary, fat tissue from the upper eyelid is also addressed. The wound is closed with very fine stitches, which are removed by me after 5-7 days. In lower eyelid lifts, excess skin and muscle are also removed. Almost always, fat tissue must be either removed or repositioned to achieve a good result. Tightening of the eyelid ligament is often necessary as well.
Aftercare and Recovery
Approximately one week after eyelid correction, you can resume social activities. Most people experience varying degrees of bruising or swelling. Around the time of suture removal, bruises have subsided enough to be well concealed with makeup, and swelling continues to diminish, restoring a fresh look to match how you feel! For the first few days after the operation, I recommend: • Cooling • Physical Rest
Result of eyelid lift
Results of eyelid correction are not immediately visible and require some patience, as each person has an individual healing process. After approximately 4-6 months, you can enjoy the final results and continue to appreciate them for many years to come.
