Eyelid surgery on the upper and lower eyelid

Blepharoplasty is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures that can help to rejuvenate the area around the eyes and positively influence the overall appearance. The surgical procedure, which aims to remove or redistribute excess skin and fatty tissue on the upper and/or lower eyelids, is also known medically as blepharoplasty.

The eyes play a central role in interpersonal communication. They make a significant contribution to how we are perceived by others and how we see ourselves. An alert, open gaze can reinforce a positive first impression and have a significant impact on a person’s charisma.

Reasons for eyelid correction

Ageing With increasing age, the skin loses elasticity and the eyelids may droop. In addition, fat deposits can form or shift in the eyelids, resulting in a puffy appearance.
Genetic factors In some cases, people already struggle with drooping eyelids or bags under the eyes at a younger age, which is often due to genetic predispositions.
Lifestyle and environmental factors Smoking, excessive exposure to the sun and stress can accelerate skin ageing and thus also cause the need for eyelid correction at an earlier stage.

Medical reasons for eyelid surgery

It is important to note that an eyelid lift is not only performed for aesthetic reasons to improve the appearance of the eyes. In the case of medical problems such as impaired vision due to drooping upper eyelids, eyelid correction may also be necessary for medical reasons.

It is advisable to undergo an examination in advance during a consultation appointment to determine the most suitable treatment option for individual needs.

Alternative to Blepharoplasty

A great alternative to a eyelid surgery is a tightening with a CO2 laser treatment. This can be performed on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids and lateral eye wrinkles.

In the case of severely drooping eyelids or pronounced bags under the eyes, however, there is no way around a surgical procedure.

Our eyes are the gateway to the world and we generally seek eye contact with other people. No wonder that the eyelid or eye area attracts particular attention for many people.

Drooping eyelids, bags under the eyes and dark circles: What's the difference?

Bags under the eyes

Bags under the eyes cause the skin on the lower eyelid to sag and fatty tissue to protrude from the eye socket, resulting in unsightly, visible changes. The surgery for under-eye bags usually improves dark circles as well, although not completely.

Dark circles

Dark circles refer to dark discolorations or shadows under the skin of the lower eyelid that can be caused by various factors such as fatigue, genetic predisposition, aging or even circulatory disorders. They are usually more superficial than bags under the eyes and mainly affect the color and texture of the skin.

Drooping eyelids

An excess of skin on the upper eyelid that can partially cover the eye and lead to a tired or older appearance. They are usually caused by the loss of skin elasticity in the course of the ageing process or can also be genetically determined.

4 steps to eyelid correction

Anesthesia

Eyelid correction is usually performed on an outpatient basis and under local anesthesia. For simultaneous upper and lower eyelid surgery, brief general anesthesia is recommended.

Method of eyelid surgery

During the upper eyelid surgery skin, some connective tissue, and muscle are removed; if necessary, fat tissue from the upper eyelid is also removed. The wound is closed with very fine stitches, which will be removed by me after 5-7 days.
During the lower eyelid surgery excess skin and muscle are also removed, almost always requiring the removal or relocation of fat tissue to achieve a good result. Often tightening of the eyelid ligament is also advisable.

Aftercare and recovery

About one week after eyelid correction you are socially presentable again. For most people more or less pronounced bruising or swelling occurs. Around the time of stitch removal, bruising has subsided enough to be easily covered with makeup, swelling gradually diminishes, and you will look as refreshed as you feel!
For the first few days after the operation, I recommend:
• Cooling
• Physical rest

Result of eyelid correction

The result of eyelid surgery is not immediately visible and requires a bit of patience, as each person has an individual healing process. After about 4-6 months, you can enjoy the final result and continue to enjoy it for many years thereafter.

How permanent is eyelid correction?

The result usually lasts for many years. However, it is possible that due to the aging process, ongoing laxity of connective tissue, and genetic factors, a hooded eyelid may reoccur after years.

What are the risks of eyelid surgery?

Patient safety is my top priority!

Every surgical procedure involves certain risks. The use of modern techniques and methods can significantly reduce the risk. Please bear in mind that all the complications listed below occur very rarely and are by no means the rule. Nevertheless, I am listing them to enable you to make a free and well-informed decision about the operation.

Postoperative bleeding Swelling Bruising

It is therefore important to take every precaution with this procedure – as with all other operations. This is a matter of course in my practice, because patient safety is my top priority.

When are sports and saunas possible again after an eyelid surgery?

Light sporting activities Heavy sporting activities
Light sports activities can be resumed after about 3-4 weeks more intense physical exertion after 6 weeks

Intense sun exposure or going to the sauna should be avoided for about 3-6 months

How do I prepare for eyelid correction?

Before eyelid surgery, we will discuss the following points together in order to positively influence the success in advance and avoid risks:
  • Good general state of health. This is a prerequisite for eyelid correction. There should be no acute or severe chronic illnesses that contraindicate a surgical procedure.
  • If you have hypertension or diabetes, you must be well-controlled with medication.
  • Blood-thinning medications must be discontinued well in advance of the surgery and, if necessary, replaced with suitable alternative medications.
  • Avoid aspirin and other anti-inflammatory drugs, as these greatly impair blood clotting.
  • The same applies to herbal medicines and food supplements, as these can also affect blood clotting. If necessary, please indicate this when making the appointment.
  • There should be no febrile infections or fever blisters present.
  • Smoking constricts blood vessels and thus leads to circulatory disorders. This can lead to serious wound healing disorders. For this reason, I strongly recommend not smoking for 6 weeks before and 6 weeks after the operation.
  • Prepare everything you will need after the operation at home and put the most important things within easy reach so that you can devote yourself to your recovery after the operation.
  • Organize your transport home in advance as you are unable to drive yourself.
  • Also avoid excessive alcohol consumption during this time.
  • Regardless of the type of procedure, drinking enough water before and after the procedure is essential for recovery.
