Breast reduction surgery

Breast reduction surgery, also known as breast reduction, is a surgical procedure that aims to reduce the size of the breasts and give them an attractive shape.

Many women suffer from overly large breasts. In my experience, back pain, bra straps cutting in, problems with clothing and during sport are the reasons why women have their breasts reduced.

Medical reasons for a breast reduction

  1. Back pain: Many women with larger breasts complain of chronic back pain as the extra weight puts strain on the spine.
  2. Neck pain and shoulder complaints: The strain on the shoulder caused by bra straps cutting into the neck can lead to persistent pain and tension. The strain on the neck area often leads to chronic cervical vertebrae complaints.
  3. Skin problems: Skin folds can form under the breasts in which sweat collects and can lead to skin irritation and infections due to skin friction. (so-called intertrigo)

A breast reduction always includes a breast lift.

A breast reduction is an option:

Health complaints such as back or neck pain can be caused by the weight of the breasts.

Skin irritations or infections can occur due to skin folds and sweat accumulation under the breasts.

Self-confidence is significantly impaired due to the disproportionate breast size and shape.

Breast reduction method

There are numerous different methods of breast reduction (medically known as "mammoplasty"). To achieve a good result, it is almost always necessary to move the nipple as well. Tissue below the nipple is removed to varying degrees in order to achieve an attractive breast shape. To do this, it is necessary to pull the scar below the nipple downwards. In certain cases, it must also be placed in the underbust crease. The respective method depends on the initial findings of each patient.

Aftercare and recovery

The recovery time for a breast reduction is relatively short. Depending on your activity, you can return to your everyday working life very quickly. Office work can be resumed after approx. 1 week, heavy and more strenuous work after approx. 4-6 weeks.

How do I prepare for a breast reduction?

Before a breast reduction, we will discuss the following points together in order to positively influence the success in advance and avoid risks:

  • General state of health and any illnesses
  • The influence of nicotine on the wound healing process. If possible, avoid smoking for 3 weeks before and after surgery.
  • The importance of avoiding aspirin and other anti-inflammatory drugs, as these greatly impair blood clotting.
  • There should be no acute or severe chronic illnesses that contraindicate a surgical procedure.
  • Chronic illnesses such as high blood pressure or diabetes must be well controlled with medication.
  • If you are going home on the same day as the operation, arrange transportation home in advance and ensure that someone is with you for at least the first night after surgery.
  • Prepare everything you will need after the operation at home and put the most important things within easy reach so that you don’t have to stretch too much after the operation and can devote yourself to your recovery.
  • Regardless of the type of procedure, drinking enough water before and after the procedure is essential for recovery.
