Intimate surgery for women

Labia minora that are too large can become a heavy burden. Very young women in particular suffer from this.

Labiaplasty or labia correktion is a procedure that is becoming increasingly popular and many women are interested in this procedure. There are many reasons for this.

Reasons for a labiaplasty

The genital area is also subject to fashionable changes. Intimate shaving or partial shaving (“Brazilian strip” or “landing strip”) has become the standard in large parts of the western world. This makes enlarged labia minora much more visible.

A condition that many women find unattractive and unpleasant. However, it is not only aesthetic reasons why women search for labia reduction or labiaplasty.

Possible problems due to enlarged labia

Women often feel disturbed by enlarged labia during sports such as horse riding, cycling or swimming and are worried that this “blemish” could be seen in swimwear.

This can also be an enormous psychological burden during sexual intercourse and can even lead to functional complaints, for example due to the displacement of parts of the labia into the vagina, to name just the most common reasons for a labia reduction.

Causes of enlarged labia minora or labia majora

Enlarged labia minora or labia majora are often congenital. Many young women are affected and suffer greatly. Enlargement of the labia minora can also occur after giving birth.

Labiaplasty is an option:

You feel that your labia are too large.

The size of your labia is a disturbing factor for you during sport and in swimwear.

If you have problems during sexual intercourse due to the size of your labia.

Function of the labia

Ideally, the labia majora gently cover and enclose the labia minora. This protects the vaginal entrance from the outside world and prevents bacteria and foreign bodies from entering.

Another important function of the labia is to protect the vagina from drying out. If the body loses this function due to enlarged labia minora, many women find this unpleasant and disturbing, for example during intimate hygiene.

3 steps of a labiaplasty

Anesthesia for labiaplasty

Labiaplasty is usually performed under local anesthesia and is therefore completely painless. If desired, the operation can be performed under general anesthesia. The medication will be adjusted to you personally for your well-being during the operation.

Reduction of the labia minora

In recent years, various methods of labiaplasty (labiaplasty) have been developed. In less pronounced cases, it may be sufficient to remove a wedge-shaped section from the labia minora and then suture the wound. In the case of more extensive findings, it is also necessary to remove a longitudinal section in order to achieve the desired result.

Another method is to close the resulting defects with small flaps of labial tissue. Of course, all these options will be discussed with you in detail so that we can respond to your wishes and ideas in the best possible way.

Reduction of the labia majora

This procedure is also possible if women feel uncomfortable and disturbed in their aesthetic perception by enlarged labia majora. The reduction of the labia majora is similar to that of the labia minora.

Enlargement of the labia majora

Sometimes it can happen that the labia majora are too small or poorly developed. If this is the case, augmentation with autologous fat may be useful. The fat is taken from other parts of the body (stomach, bottom, hips...) and inserted into the labia minora. Around 50% - 70% of the autologous fat introduced remains permanently and leads to the desired result.

Aftercare and recovery

As labiaplasty is an outpatient procedure, you can go home immediately afterwards. Allow yourself to rest in the following days. Sitting and lying down is usually more comfortable than walking and standing. You will be given a leaflet with detailed information for the first few days after labiaplasty to take home with you. As we use self-dissolving sutures stich removal is not necessary. Office work is usually possible again after around 1 week. You should refrain from sport and sexual intercourse for a few weeks.

The result of labiaplasty

The result of labiaplasty is seen after approx. 6-12 weeks. When augmenting the labia majora with autologous fat, it will take about 3 months to the final result.

Before a labiaplasty, we will discuss the following points together in order to positively influence the success in advance and avoid risks:

  • General state of health and any illnesses
  • The influence of nicotine on the wound healing process. If possible, avoid smoking for 3 weeks before and after surgery.
  • Avoid aspirin and other anti-inflammatory drugs, as these greatly impair blood clotting.
  • There must be no acute or severe chronic illnesses that speak against surgery.
  • Chronic illnesses such as high blood pressure or diabetes must be well controlled with medication.
  • On the day of the operation, arrange transportation home and ensure that someone is with you at least for the first night after the operation.
  • Prepare everything you will need after the operation at home and put the most important things within easy reach so that you can devote yourself to your recovery after the operation.
  • Regardless of the type of procedure, drinking enough water before and after the procedure is essential for recovery.
