4 steps to breast augmentation with implants
Anesthesia
Breast augmentation with implants is always performed under general anesthesia. Our anesthetist will guide you through the operation.
Method of breast augmentation with implants
In over 90% of cases, access is made in the inframammary fold. In simultaneous breast lift the incision can be made at the margin of the areola. The implant is then inserted and its correct fit and position checked. The wound is then cosmetically sutured and a special bra is applied.
Position of the implants
- In women with a very narrow chest, the implant should be placed behind the pectoral muscle, as otherwise the implant may be visible or noticeable at the edges after the breast augmentation.
- For women who do competitive sports, it is more reasonable to place the implant in front of the pectoral muscle, as otherwise the implant may move during physical activitiy.
- In a secondary procedure it is reasonable to place the implant under the muscle.
- If you want very large implants, implants can not be placed under the muscle, because there is only a limited space.
Aftercare and recovery
Thanks to a special surgical technique and particularly precise hemostasis, my patients do NOT need any drains and can move freely and unrestrictedly immediately after the operation. Patients go home just a few hours after breast augmentation. Be sure to have everything you need at home. Showering and washing your hair is possibel on the day of the operation. From the first day after the operation, you may do everything that you normally do at home, with exception of heavy work. In a few cases, I recommend spending a night in hospital. Simple office work can be resumed after 2-3 days, more strenuous work after 2-3 weeks.

How permanent is breast augmentation with implants?
Modern implants have a lifetime guarantee on certain product features or an up to 10 years for others. If no unforeseen changes or complications occur, the implants can remain in the body for a life time after breast augmentation or breast lift. However, the body and connective tissue can change with age. Under the influence of gravity, tissue and also the breast sag. Many women find this change disturbing and stressful. Then the desire for a new breast lift and/or breast augmentation may arise years or even decades later.
What are the risks of breast augmentation with implants?
Patient safety is my top priority!
Every surgical procedure involves certain risks. However, modern surgical methods and other accompanying measures can significantly reduce risks, so that all the complications listed below are fortunately very rare, but they can occur in individual cases despite all precautionary measures. The most common risks and complications include secondary bleeding and hematoma discoloration, wound infections and wound healing disorders, sensitivity disorders and capsular fibrosis. Fortunately, all other risks are extremely rare. Please note that conscientious adherence to the postoperative instructions will help to further minimize risks.
How do I prepare for a breast augmentation with implants?
Before breast augmentation, we will discuss the following points together in order to positively influence the success in advance and avoid risks:
- General state of health and any illnesses
- The influence of nicotine on the wound healing process. If possible, avoid smoking for 3 weeks before and after surgery.
- The importance of avoiding aspirin and other anti-inflammatory drugs, as these greatly impair blood clotting.
- There should be no acute or severe chronic illnesses that contraindicate a surgical procedure.
- Chronic illnesses such as high blood pressure or diabetes must be well controlled with medication.
- If you are going home on the same day as the operation, arrange transportation home in advance and ensure that someone is with you for at least the first night after surgery.
- Prepare everything you will need after the operation at home and put the most important things within easy reach so that you don’t have to stretch too much after the operation and can devote yourself to your recovery.
- Regardless of the type of procedure, drinking enough water and eating a balanced diet before and after the procedure is beneficial for recovery.
When can i do sports and sauna after breast augmentation with implants?
Light sports activities can be resumed about 6 weeks after breast augmentation. Other sporting activities should not be started until at least 8 weeks after the breast augmentation. Sauna and solarium should be avoided for at least 3 months.
What should be considered during pregnancy after breast augmentation with implants?
Pregnancies are usually unproblematic regarding the breasts after breast augmentation. Under the influence of hormones, the breast enlarges and the tissue regresses after weaning. Depending on the patient’s age, genetic and other factors, the tissue can regress well and form a firm breast. In certain cases, a certain degree of sagging remains. Sometimes, however, corrections are necessary – especially after several pregnancies.
Is breastfeeding possible after breast augmentation with implants?
YES! Breastfeeding is not a problem after breast augmentation. Regardless of the access route for breast augmentation and the anatomical location of the implant (subglandular or submuscular), the mammary gland is not or only minimally touched and the implant is always placed behind the mammary gland. Breastfeeding is therefore possible without any problems and is also completely safe for the child. Please note that there are women who are not able to breastfeed even without breast surgery.
